It's always a good idea to take a look at your expenses and plan for situations that health insurance doesn't cover. This is especially true when you have a high deductible plan in which many initial expenses fall on your shoulders. Thankfully, there are several options available to individuals looking for additional coverage. One such option is a flexible spending account.
Have a Plan for Medical Expenses that Your Health Insurance Doesn't Cover
Flexible spending accounts, like other types of health savings accounts, are designed to help people pay for expenses not covered under their health insurance plans. An HRA, or Health Reimbursement Account, is run by an employer and is used to reimburse employees for qualified expenses. Two types of accounts that are controlled by employees are HSAs, Health Savings Accounts, and FSAs, Flexible Spending Accounts.
Each of the above can help you plan for medical that health insurance doesn't cover. They do this by deducting pre-tax dollars from your paycheck (or in the case of HRAs, employers contribute pre-tax dollars) and place them in an account that can be used to reimburse qualified expenses. These accounts can both help you save on your health insurance costs and also reduce the amount of taxes you pay.
With a flexible spending account, getting reimbursed is a simple as swiping your debit card. Employees are given cards that are directly connected to their accounts. This allows them to pay for expenses at the point of purchase. In many cases, no additional paperwork is necessary.
